The Metrosexual is Here to Stay

The Metrosexual is Here to Stay

“Metrosexual” is an oft-used term these days, particularly in reference to fashion. Young male celebrities are often described as metrosexual. And you can find metrosexual clothing, swimwear, makeup, and many other items.

So what does “metrosexual” mean? It is basically a generic term to describe a young man who takes pride in his appearance, wears fashionable clothing and is well groomed. And while he has all the style and panache of a gay man, he’s more likely to be straight. Also, he tends to be an urban professional with high disposable income, much of which he spends on his appearance.

For men in the middle and upper classes being well dressed was always a requirement, particularly professionally. But the metrosexual is different. He dresses uniquely. He doesn’t have a standard style; he has his own personal style. He’s not just another clean shaven man in a suit. He wears one that is distinctive and unique. And he’s fit, strong and looks after his skin and hair.

Needless to say, the metrosexual is not like most men. Blokes generally don’t prize their appearance highly, and are apt to “let themselves go” physically, particularly as they approach middle age. Also, in many countries there is a widely held belief amongst men and women that a man who takes care of his appearance is vain and effeminate, and quite probably gay. So, in nations where there is pervasive homophobia, it is much more more likely for men to affect a more rugged, blokey attitude and sneer at the whole idea of being metrosexual.

So there is definitely widespread resistance to the whole phenomena. Because of this many have argued that the metrosexual revolution isn’t anything more than a passing fad. Many have compared him to the dreaded “Sensitive New Age Guy” or “SNAG” of the eighties and nineties. The term was used derisively as often as not back then. And it’s hardly ever used now, if at all.

But it must be remembered that the metrosexual has been around for quite a while already. The label was originally coined by the journalist Mark Simpson in an article he wrote for The Independent back in 1994. He expanded on this in an article for the online magazine Salon, in 2002, after which it became widely popular.

While hardly any prominent males have ever wanted to be called a SNAG, many of today’s most famous celebrities are happy to be known as metrosexuals. These include David Beckham, Ewan McGregor, Orlando Bloom, Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Robbie Williams.

There are even a few politicians who have been similarly categorized – Bill Clinton for instance. Although older than most other metrosexuals he does fit this definition well. And many are also calling the new American President, Barack Obama, a metrosexual.

These two examples illustrate one facet that a majority of men find appealing in the stereotype: power. You don’t become the leader of the most powerful nation in the world if you’re a wuss! Unlike the SNAG, the metrosexual hasn’t sacrificed his masculinity. And this is the key to why he isn’t an endangered species doomed to extinction, but is here to stay.

Sun And Summer Dresses Spotted In The Uk

Sun And Summer Dresses Spotted In The Uk

We interrupt your regularly scheduled reading to bring you this important message. People from all over the UK have been reporting the sighting of… well it’s almost too impossible to believe. To protect my credibility, in case this is another scam like the whole Robbie Williams rejoining Take That story I ran with last year, I’m going to leave it up to the eyewitnesses to try to explain.

David from London – “I was on the field running laps for my morning warm-up and was just about to “Bend It” when this strange object appeared in the sky. It had been so long since I had seen it that I didn’t even recognise it at first.”

Van from Belfast – “I was walking out to my car to head to the studio when all of a sudden the sky lit up in front of me. It was so bright I had to squint. And the feeling… it was almost like a Warm Love washed over me.”

Sean from Edinburgh – “I heard a couple of the fellas talking about it down the pub but I thought they were just trying to wind me up. But sure enough the next morning when I went to go home there it was, staring me straight in the face. You didn’t have to be a 007 to realise what it was.”

Charlotte from Cardiff – “As soon as I woke up and looked out my window I knew for sure that I would be taking my two children Ruby and Dexter to the park that day. I mean you have to take advantage of the sun whenever you see it.”

That’s right, you read it here first. People all over the UK are reporting sightings of the SUN! And you know what that’s going to spark… sightings of beautiful summer dresses!

As previously reported, if you’re looking for this season’s hottest fashion trends including gorgeous summer dresses, oversized tops and multi-coloured leggings head to ChiaraFashion.co.uk! How to find a Great Band for Your Wedding

September 5th, 2010 No comments

How to find a Great Band for Your Wedding

Your wedding is one of the most important life-events and finding the right band to play at your reception can make or break the day. A lot of people use DJ’s because they are less expensive and have a wider range of music but they lack the vibrant and magical atmosphere that can be created with the presence of a good live band. A good wedding band will charge anything between £500 to £2000, but you definitely get what you pay for. Here are some of the considerations in choosing a wedding band:

The Time Of Year

You can expect to pay more for a wedding band in August than if you decide to get married in February. A band that has built up a reputation (especially with agents) as being a good wedding band will usually be in a position to dictate which bookings they want to take, certainly at the busiest times of the year.

The number of people in the band.

What you pay will be split between the members of the band, therefore don’t be surprised to find that a nine piece soul band wants more than a four piece! Additionally there is the matter of space; the venue for your evening function may dictate the size of the band you can have, in fact in some cases you may find that due to the size of your function room you will only have room for a disco.

How Long Will The Band Play For?

Live bands will usually play three 45 minute sets or two 1 hour plus sets. Bands prefer to play two longer sets; the reason? 45 minutes of music usually equates to about 10 songs which means that just when you have everyone in the party and dance mood it’s time to stop for a break so a one hour plus session will keep all the dancing queens happy.

What Type Of Band Should I Be Looking For?

Simple this one – just because YOU love Pink Floyd, it doesn’t mean you have to have a Pink Floyd Tribute Band! Your wedding guests may not be as appreciative as you. Despite it being ‘your day’, you have your guests to think about and at most weddings (because of the generations being bridged) you will have to try and please all the people all the time; you may like soul music but will your guests be happy with an entire evening of it?

The other option that some people go for is to have a particular type of Tribute Band (Abba, Commitments, Madonna…). I won’t prattle on about these too much other than it is usually best to go through a reputable agent so you know that the “Robbie Williams” you are getting is not just a weekend karaoke pub singer with a shaved head, a James Bond suit and a collection of well dodgy backing tapes! Most Tribute Bands will usually do one 45 – 60 minute set which covers that particular artists greatest hits (which is great if everyone likes that artist and not so great if they don’t) so with most tribute acts you will probably also need a dj.

The most popular type of bands for a wedding are those that do ‘covers’. Covers are simply when the band plays a well-known song; this is extremely popular with wedding guests as they can relate to the music being played. The best bands will be able to play some of the all-time classic pieces, but speak to them first and tell them what you are looking for. They should have lots of experience and will be able to give you some advice.

Whatever you do, plan and book early. But most of all – enjoy your wedding day!

Do I Need an Agent?

September 4th, 2010 No comments

Do I Need an Agent?

This course assumes you do not have an agent, and that you are attempting to secure a record deal on your own. Some of the record companies will not speak with you directly, and will require that you have representation for them to entertain any possibility of working with you. Those record companies we will filter out of our list of contacts. One of the key phrases to look for are “We accept unsolicited material”.

The next step to obtaining a record deal is to identify those record companies who are currently signing artists with music genres similar or the same as yours. A simple search on the Internet will yield far more record companies than you could ever hope to approach in a lifetime. So whittle down the list. Research the companies to find out what artists they have signed, and what type of music they specialize in. If you are a Rap artist, contacting a company that pretty much carries only country artists would be wasting both yours and their time. Be selective at this point. If a record company is vague about what they do, move them to the bottom of your list.

Bill Lamb, a respected music journalist has compiled a list of these top 4 record companies and the top10 independent record labels in the arena of Pop and Dance music.

Top four Record Companies

1) Universal Music Group

The Universal Music Group sells more music than any other major label. They accounted for 25.5% of the market in 2005, according to the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry www.ifpi.org) The group’s well-known label imprints include Geffen, Interscope, Island, Motown, and Universal. Key artists are:

• Black Eyed Peas

• Mariah Carey

• 50 Cent

• Gwen Stefani

• Kanye West

2) Sony BMG Music Entertainment

Sony BMG Music Entertainment is the second biggest major record label in music sales. They accounted for 21.5% of the market in 2005. The company’s well-known label imprints include Astralwerks, Capitol, EMI, Mute, and Virgin. Key artists are:

• Kelly Clarkson

• Alicia Keys

• Outkast

• Shakira

• Britney Spears

3) EMI Group

The EMI Group is the third biggest major record label in music sales. They accounted for 13.4% of the market in 2005. The group’s well-known label imprints include Arista, Columbia, Epic, J, Jive, and RCA. Key artists are:

• The Beatles

• Coldplay

• Gorillaz

• Rolling Stones

• Robbie Williams

4) Warner Music Group

The Warner Music Group is the fourth major record label in music sales. They accounted for 11.3% of the market in 2005. The group’s well-known label imprints include Asylum, Atlantic, Lava, Reprise, Rhino, and Warner Bros. Key artists are:

• Green Day
